STATE PARK INTERPRETER I – NORTH COAST REDWOODS DISTRICT/ INTERPRETATION AND EDUCATION/ HUMBOLDT REDWOODS STATE PARK
The reporting location for this position is Humboldt Redwoods State Park, located at 17119 Avenue of the Giants, Weott, CA 95571. This position will work u nder the supervision of the State Park Interpreter Ill. The State Park Interpreter I is responsible for building and sustaining park partnerships and community engagement public programming activities necessary to create high-quality and relevant visitor interpretive experiences to connect visitors and community members with our parks and resources. Assist in researching, planning, developing, presenting and supporting innovative interpretive programs at various park units within North Coast Redwoods District (NCRD) and local communities. Engages in personal and non-personal interpretive services and community outreach events with a focus on community building, engagement, and recruitment. This position will work closely with parks partners, staff and volunteers, Tribal partners, community groups, local schools and educational institutions, park co-operative associations, and other local organizations. This position will work in Humboldt Redwoods State Park (HRSP), as well as in parks throughout the Eel River Sector, including, but not limited to Richardson Grove SP, Benbow SRA, and Standish Hickey SRA. This position will periodically work in nearby state parks throughout the North Coast Redwoods District (NCRD). The Interpreter I will present campfire programs, Junior Ranger activities, guided walks, roving interpretation, and deliver interpretive programs for local school groups and other community members. In addition to traditional interpretation, the State Park Interpreter I develops high-quality interpretive media including signs, exhibits, brochures, newsletters, and videos. This position supports Eel River Sector social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and elsewhere, and coordinates with NCRD personnel to publish posts across District platforms. The State Park Interpreter I will deliver distance-learning programs through the Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students (PORTS) program, as well as live-streamed programs over social media accounts. This position serves as lead to volunteers and seasonal interpretive staff across visitor centers, and will develop, coordinate and deliver special events. The successful candidate should have a strong background in interpretive program development and delivery, knowledge of digital graphic design and social media, experience working with partners in pursuit of common goals, and ability to communicate with diverse audiences. The incumbent should have a familiarity with natural and cultural resources in Northern California. Fluency in Spanish highly desired. The position will undertake special assignments as needed throughout the NCRD, will perform administrative tasks as necessary, and will work some irregular & weekend hours.
Knowledge of: Methods and techniques of interpretative planning; principles of public interpretation; principles of exhibit design and preparation; familiarity with natural and social sciences in general, and California cultural and natural history in particular; understanding of scientific research methods and audio-visual techniques; methods and techniques used in preserving and interpreting historical objects, sites and buildings; the use of digital media software including the Adobe suite of graphics software.

This is a uniformed classification; uniform standards may be found in the Uniform Handbook. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays as necessary. Prolonged standing, bending, and sitting. Work inside and outside; walking, bending, and lifting.
Transport equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Frequent walking on even and uneven surfaces. Operates a motor vehicle to attend various sites in the district to complete assigned tasks.
