Senior Data Modeler / Data Architect – Enterprise Data Warehouse Modernization

Do you want to shape the future of healthcare data and help modernize systems that directly impact public health? This role gives you the opportunity to design, model, and architect large-scale data solutions in Microsoft Azure while supporting statewide health initiatives.

We're seeking a Senior Data Modeler / Data Architect to play a key role in the modernization of the Department of Health's Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). You'll bring expertise in data design, modeling, and architecture to ensure accuracy, scalability, and security across critical systems. Your work will power projects like the Data Modernization Initiative, PA NEDSS NextGen, COVID-19 response, PA LIMS Replacement, and other vital public health initiatives.

What You'll Do

As a senior technical leader, you'll work closely with analysts, developers, DBAs, and health program stakeholders to design data solutions that transform how information is stored, accessed, and reported.

• Architect Modern Data Solutions – Lead the design of data models and frameworks to support Azure-based EDW modernization using Databricks, Delta Lake, and Synapse .

• Model & Document Data – Build logical and physical data models, data dictionaries, and metadata repositories that enable scalability and compliance.

• Optimize Data Workflows – Analyze business use cases, translate them into optimized data models, and implement efficient data flows for reporting and analytics.

• Maintain Data Quality & Security – Audit existing systems, resolve variances, enforce integrity rules, and implement best practices for data governance and security.

• Support Critical Programs – Ensure health initiatives have accurate, accessible, and timely data for decision-making and reporting.

• Share Knowledge & Best Practices – Conduct training and mentor teams on data modeling standards, documentation, and long-term maintainability.

What You'll Bring

• 10 years of data modeling and architecture experience in enterprise environments.

• Advanced expertise in data profiling, analysis, and design (domain models, objects, attributes, relationships, integrity rules).

• Proven experience with logical and physical modeling (ErWin or similar tools).

• Strong proficiency in SQL Server, T-SQL, SSIS, ELT processes, scripts, and queries .

• Experience designing data warehouses (facts, dimensions, star schema) .

• Hands-on knowledge of Azure Databricks, Delta Lake, Synapse, and Python .

• Familiarity with Agile/Scrum practices and tools like Azure DevOps.

• Demonstrated ability to present complex concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (advanced study preferred).

  Preferred Experience

• Background in public health or healthcare data systems .

• Experience working with sensitive datasets in highly regulated environments.
