**Summary**
**SUMMARY:** The Pulmonary and Critical Care Specialist is responsible for the expert provision of safe, efficient, patient-centered, and cost-effective care within the Hospital. The Pulmonary and Critical Care Specialist shall provide the very best high-quality care to the patients assigned to the service through the Emergency Department and other approved referral sources. The role of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Specialist is to provide inpatient care, predominantly in settings in the acute care and intensive care units, and overall manage and coordinate patient care throughout treatment while patients are hospitalized. This position reports to both the Director of Pulmonary Services and the Director of Critical Care.
**DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:** NOTE: Following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.
1. Provide critical care intensive support for all patients admitted, including providing daily triage rounds, providing Critical Care consultation, managing Code Blues, supervising invasive procedures in the ICU and elsewhere at Highland as needed, and optimizing the use of ICU beds.
2. Perform professional services as are necessary to assure the appropriate quality of care to Patients.
3. Provide consultation as requested by Medical Staff, including collaboration with emergency department physicians regarding an expedited response to the emergency department when requested.
4. Facilitate and manage the appropriate use of specialists and coordinate Patients' care, including ordering specialists' consultations.
5. Abide by all current and future federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and guidelines regarding the transfer of emergency patients to other healthcare facilities.
6. Complete all records and reports on a timely basis and in accordance with AHMG's medical records policies and Medical Staff Bylaws.
7. Provide orientation and training regarding the Critical Care and Pulmonary Services for the Hospital's healthcare team.
8. Organize, attend, and participate in Pulmonary and Critical Care meetings and other medical staff conferences, including continuing education programs.
9. Plan and participate in in-service education programs for mid-level practitioners, nursing, and other staff.
10. Serve as the Subspecialty Education Coordinator (SEC) for Pulmonary and Critical Care within the Internal Medicine residency program. This includes curriculum development, evaluating the Pulmonary and Critical Care program, and developing a strong structural foundation for Pulmonary and Critical Care education.
11. Didactic lectures and board review for Internal Medicine residents
12. Serving as a professional role model for trainees with peers, patients, families, and other members of the healthcare team
13. Report to the hospital, on an as-needed basis, material concerns about quality of care, delay in delivery of medical services to patients, or any patient concerns.
14. Cooperate with the hospitals in implementing new procedures, controls, and systems to promote and facilitate quality, cost controls, reimbursement functions, standardization of products and equipment, and any other requests made by the hospital.
15. Provide effective and timely communications to referring or admitting physicians, patients, and family concerning the clinical status of each patient admitted through the Hospitalists Program.
16. Promote and maintain good public relations on behalf of the hospital and assist the hospital in attaining goals established regarding patient/employee/physician satisfaction in connection with the delivery of clinical services. Pulmonary and Critical Care Specialists will be "goodwill ambassadors" of the hospital.
17. Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Pulmonary Chair of Medicine, Associate Chief Medical Officer and/or the Chief Medical Officer.
**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:**
Education: Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) is required.
Minimum Experience: Completion of an accredited ACGME or AOA Internal Medicine Residency and a Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship.
Required Licenses/Certifications: Board-certified or eligible in Pulmonary and Critical Care
Required Licenses/Certifications: Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of California.
Valid DEA license
